Curse not the rain —
Hear its song on
roof and window pane,
sweet upon the earth
Drink it through the soles
of your bare feet,
sip it from leaf and petal,
Wear it as a garment —
robe of mist, shawl of fog,
lined in silver
Place it as a circlet
upon your brow,
about your neck
Curse not the rain
as it cleanses, cools,
and nourishes —
The sun will come again.

You write so beautifully. Carrie, I just love this. Especially one who loves a rainy day!

Thank you, Colleen! I suppose it’s obvious that I, too, love rainy days. I’ll have to share with you separately another beautiful poem about rain by Beatrice Goldsmith…!

Yes, we have rain to thank for this incredibly lush summer. Thanks for the reminder!

Rain… I left Seattle three years ago. I miss the rain terribly, especially in the Fall. I would often get off the bus a few stops early so I could walk through it. That wonderful smell, and the lush green. I never understood why people saw it as a curse.

I have always loved the rain, and yes, the smell in particular. Sometimes, I wonder if it’s due to humanity’s progress, which seems to remove us from nature, that has made us forget how lovely and necessary rain is. I don’t say this in a judgmental way, but in a curiosity about unintended costs and consequences. For my own part, I will continue to enjoy the rain. Maybe I should visit Seattle! ๐
