Veering across my path,
unexpected as a sudden Summer storm —
Nehkbet,
trailing feathered cloak
of doubt and shadow.
Limbs outstretched in graceful curve,
in embrace of light and life,
she swallows both with grave mercy.
I shiver beneath her passage,
but pass, she does —
winging onward and off
to guide aloft
another restless soul.

I love the elegant shorthand notes as much as the actual poem! For another great vulture poem, check out “Under the Vulture-Tree” by David Bottoms (found on Poetry Out Loud). These birds make for good inspiration!

Thank you, as always, for your generous appreciation and comments — and I do so like David Bottoms’ “Under the Vulture-Tree”! Maybe the vultures will get some respect! 🙂

Very nice. Vultures are fascinating to see in the air. And they seem to be big chickens on the ground – they run/fly away at any passer-by. They are an elegant animal with a necessary but unpleasant task in life. It would not be a pleasant world without them.

Thank you! And I agree with you — “necessary but unpleasant task”, so true. They need any champions they can get. 🙂
